Mdou Moctar immediately stands out as one of the most innovative artists in contemporary Saharan music. His unconventional interpretations of Tuareg guitar and have pushed him to the forefront of a crowded scene. Back home, hes celebrated for his original compositions and verbose poetry, an original creator in a genre defined by cover bands. In the exterior, where Saharan rock has become one of the continents biggest musical exports, hes earned a name for himself with his guitar moves. Mdou shreds with a relentless and frenetic energy that puts his contemporaries to shame.Mdou Moctar hails from a small village in central Niger in a remote region steeped in religious tradition. Growing up in an area where secular music was all but prohibited, he taught himself to play on a homemade guitar cobbled together out of wood. It was years before he found a real guitar and taught himself to play in secret. His immediately became a star amongst the village youth. In a surprising turn, his songs began to win over local religious leaders with their lyrics of respect, honor, and tradition. In 2008, Mdou traveled to Nigeria to record his debut album of spacey autotune, drum machine, and synthesizer. The album became a viral hit on the mp3 networks of West Africa, and was later released on the compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones. In 2013, he released Afelan, compiled from field recordings of his performances recorded in his village. Then he shifted gears, producing and starring the first Tuareg language film, a remake of Princes Purple Rain (Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red in it). Finally, in 2017, he created a solo folk album, Sousoume Tamachek, a mellow blissed out recording evoking the calm desert soundscape. Without a band present, he played every instrument on the record. I am a very curious person and I want to push Tuareg music far, he says.

After a meteoric rise from obscurity to a national touring band, Los Angeles-based Grateful Shred has made the most of its time in the spotlight. The lineup, featuring Dan Horne and Austin McCutchen alongside keyboardist Adam MacDougall woke the Grateful Dead cosmos with a unique laid-back harmony driven sound. The band literally went from playing the Shakedown Street vendor area prior to Dead and Company shows to touring the United States. The moment that sent the bands popularity soaring is the Busted at the Bowl video, a YouTube video that features Shred members starting an impromptu set in the parking lot of the Hollywood Bowl before a Dead and Company show in 2017. They dont get too far before drawing so much attention that the police shut them down. Instantly creating Shred-cred, this was a bit of good fortune that doesnt get past McCutchen. Weve been dealt some pretty good cards, he states. Its been cool to roll with it and push forward and continually make stuff happen. Things have gone our way. Even that video happened magically. It was put together at the last minute, and boom! The thing is, Grateful Shred manage to channel that elusive Dead vibe: wide-open guitar tones, effortless three-part vocal harmonies, choogling beats, and yes, plenty of tripped out, Shredded solos. The look, the sound, the atmosphere. Its uncanny. Far from being a historical re-enactment, Grateful Shreds laissez faire vibe infuses the band with a gentle spirit, warmth, and (dare we say it) authenticity. From their killer merch game to their eminently watchable YouTube channel, theyre clearly having a rad time and spreading the love. Strangely enough, in a world overflowing with wax museum nostalgia and Deadly sentimentalism, we need the Shred, now more than ever. Grateful Shred is: Austine Beede, Dan Horne, Alex Koford, Mikaela Davis, Adam MacDougall, Austin McCutchen, John Lee Shannon

Contemporary artist Paul Rousso is credited with the 20th century expression, Anything is possible with a dollar and a dream. Embodying this truism, Asa Taccone chased his dream to Los Angeles in 2007 when an established mentor provided a check for $10,000 so the promising ingnue producer could quit his job and pursue music full-time. Rather than blow it on one of L.A.s many inherent vices (or a weekend trip to Las Vegas), he incubated this miraculous nest egg until he could subsist and survive off his own songwriting, production, and artistry as one-half of the duo Electric Guest with drummer Matthew Cornbread Compton.Electric Guest embrace the same energy, hunger, and mindset that first brought Asa to this point on their aptly titled fourth full-length album, 10K.So, 10K is back to the basics, he affirms. Nobody was in the room or on the record but friends. In a way, it feels like this is actually my first album. For me, there was a slow arc of returning to a different place where youre making art for the sake of art. This is a full circle moment.Behind-the-scenes, Asa relentlessly pushed himself as a songwriter and producer, building up a robust catalog in the process. He co-wrote and co-produced Portugal. The Mans 7x-Platinum Feel It Still, earning the band a Top 5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and a GRAMMY Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. His repertoire also expanded with Lily-Rose Depps World Class Sinner / Im A Freak for The Weeknds The Idol, Amins Campfire [feat. Injury Reserve], Carly Rae Jepsens Feels Right, and more. Hes the rare creative chameleon who can cook up Cheat Code for H.E.R. or hilarious viral tentpole tracks for The Lonely Island a la Natalies Rap with Academy Award winner Natalie Portman, Motherlover with Justin Timberlake, Here I Go with Charli XCX, and 3-Way (The Golden Rule) with Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga, among others. Simultaneously, Electric Guest racked up over half-a-billion streams across Mondo [2013], Plural [2017], and KIN [2019]. Of the latter, UPROXX applauded how Electric Guest bring back golden-era pop and R It received further praise from Billboard, EUPHORIA., and more.Throughout 2025, he hunkered down and poured his focus into Electric Guest. For as much as he concurrently collaborated with top-tier talent, he actually found the most inspiration much closer to home.
