Access to information is a fundamental right, and live captioning is an integral part of providing those who are d/Deaf or hard-of-hearing with access to live content, such as television, conferences, webinars, etc. However, it can also be a useful tool for those with a language barrier, or those who may not be so familiar with the terminology used. This presentation provides an introduction to the world of live captioning and its use on TV and in other settings, such as conferences, webinars, shows, etc. Find out more about the skills involved in respeaking, the challenges of subtitle production and its impact on the respeaker’s cognitive load. We will also delve into different types of clients, software and how to get started if you’re interested in becoming a live captioner. About the speaker: Maria Dunkley is a freelance French & German to English translator, interpreter and live captioner based in Glasgow, Scotland. She holds a BA in Modern Languages and an MA in Translation and Interpreting. Maria has experience subtitling a wide range of programmes for live TV, from Love Island to the Olympics & Paralympics 2024, as well as various live events, from webinars to comedy shows. Outside her work, she endeavours to spread awareness of the importance of access services to ensure all viewers are able to enjoy and educate themselves without barriers. This webinar is free of charge for SUBTLE members and has a cost of £15 for non-members. The recording will be made available for all SUBTLE members after the event, and it will also be shared with non-members who registered. Ticket sales end at 23:59 BST on the 29th October.
