He was selected as a JFL New Face in 2023 and was part of the inaugural Netflix Introducing... Showcase at the 2022 Netflix Is a Joke festival. Shows Are Standing Room OnlyFormed in 1995, Save Ferris remains one of the seminal and most beloved bands from the third wave of ska. The groups Orange County home was fertile ground for a thriving music scene, with punk, rock, and ska emerging from the region. Save Ferris blended the best elements of these sounds to help bring the regions sound to the world. The groups humble beginnings saw them play house parties and local venues, powered by Monique Powells high-octane vocals. Save Ferris live show instantly became a hit. As the word spread, the band got a much-needed boost. Legendary KROQ DJ Rodney Bingenheimer got a hold of the bands self-released album. He played their cover of Dexys Midnight Runners Come on Eileen on his Rodney on the ROQ show and the response was overwhelming. Soon thereafter, Kevin Weatherly picked up the song and it was added to the legendary taste-making rock stations rotation. All of this happened independently without a record label and with Powell serving as the singer and band manager. Major labels started noticing the buzz that was emanating from Orange County. In 1996, the band won a Grammy showcase award for best unsigned band, and with Epic Records David Massey as one of the judges, Save Ferris would sign with the label. Epic re-released the Introducing Save Ferris EP and, in 1997, Save Ferris unleashed their debut album, It Means Everything. Save Ferris toured the world for the better part of the next six years, with 1999s Modified released during that time. In 2003, the band went on a hiatus. Starting in 2004, Powell switched gears and used her vocal talents to become a go-to studio musician. She appeared on albums for The Used, Goldfinger, Foxy Shazam, Lost Prophets, Mest, and Hilary Duff, among many others. Slowly, however, Powell started having health issues. In 2015, after years of painful back issues, she underwent a risky procedure to fix her broken neck that could have damaged her greatest musical weapon: her vocal cords. Ahead of the procedure, Powell made a promise to her father, who had been begging her to return to the stage: if the surgery was successful, shed bring back Save Ferris. And it was a success. That year, Powell, with a new cast of characters, reformed Save Ferris. The hype surrounding the band was massive. After months of rehabilitation, Powell brought Save Ferris home to Orange County where it played a sold-out show at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa. Another giant show at the Santa Monica Pier, with over 20,000 people in attendance, was put out on vinyl. These raucous shows proved that the band wasnt just back, but ready to roar. Through a crowdfunded campaign in 2016, Powell and her bandmates went into the studio to record a new EP. Titled Checkered Past, the collection was released the following year, and produced by John Avila of Oingo Boingo. The EP featured an appearance by Neville Staple of The Specials, one of Powells favorite artists. Following Checkered Pasts release, Save Ferris played the entire 2017 Warped Tour on the main stage, headlined shows, and played festivals across the world. The future is as bright as it has been for Save Ferris in a long time. Powell scrapped a record she wrote prior to the pandemic and is currently at work on the first new Save Ferris album in nearly two decades. The band recently packed the House of Blues in Anaheim, playing in front of fans of all ages. Powell is the centerpiece of the action. Her dazzling onstage presence continues to wow audiences and the bands energy is infectious. Save Ferris are out to prove that theyre no nostalgia act, with their best days still ahead of them.

These are some of the strangeand richly drawn characters who inhabit James McMurtry’s eleventh album, The BlackDog & the Wandering Boy. A supremely insightful and inventive storyteller, he teasesvivid worlds out of small details, setting them to arrangements that have the elements ofAmericana—rolling guitars, barroom harmonies, traces of banjo and harmonica—butsound too sly and smart for such a general category. Funny and sad often in the samebreath, the album adds a new chapter to a long career that has enjoyed a resurgence asyoung songwriters like Sarah Jarosz and Jason Isbell cite him as a formative influence.As varied as they are, these new story-songs find inspiration in scraps from his family’spast: a stray sketch, an old poem by a family friend, the hallucinations experienced byhis father, the writer Larry McMurtry. “It’s something I do all the time,” he says, “butusually I draw from my own scraps.” As any good writer will do, McMurtry collects littleideas and hangs on to them for years, sometimes even decades. “South Texas Lawman”grew out of a line from a poem by a friend of the McMurtry clan, T.D. Hobart. Driven bygravelly guitars and a loose rhythm section, it’s a careful study of a man whose feelingsof obsolescence motivate him to take drastic action in the final verse. “Dwight’d stay atour house way back in the ‘70s, when we lived in Virginia. During one visit he wrote thispoem about his father’s attitude toward South Texas. He wrote it down on cardboard,and I came across it recently. There was a line about hunting quail on horseback, andthat was the seed of the song. I’ve lost the poem since then.”The rumbling title track, a kind of squirrelly blues, features two mysterious figures whoappear only to those slipping from reality, yet it’s never grim nor especially despairing.Instead, McMurtry namechecks a “Weird Al” deep cut and depicts a tortured soul whodoesn’t have to work a nine-to-five. He finds a defiant humor in the situation at oddswith the gravity of the source material. “The title of the album and that song comes frommy stepmother, Faye. After my dad passed, she asked me if he ever talked to me abouthis hallucinations. He’d gone into dementia for a while before he died, but hadn’tmentioned to me anything about seeing things. She told me his favorite hallucinationswere the black dog and the wandering boy. I took them and applied them to a fictionalcharacter.

In the summer of 2023, the Irish folk trio, Amble - Co Longfords Ross McNerney, Co Leitrims Robbie Cunningham and Co Sligos Oisin McCaffrey had known each other for what the Irish call a wet day when a phone call from Los Angeles changed their lives. They werent to know it then, but their day jobs (respectively, a secondary school teacher, a primary school teacher, and a data scientist) were soon to end.Ambles jump from relative obscurity to signing to a major label isnt the usual story, however. There were no canny strategies for world domination, no ruthless plans to undercut the opposition, no aching ambitions to match a billion streams. Rather, there was (and is) a less is more approach within which the most important elements are the music and the wholesome enjoyment of playing it.I was teaching in Dublin for a couple of years, says Robbie Cunningham (vocals/guitar). I always wanted to get into music, but I never dared to do it on my own. Through social media, I knew of Oisin, who in his spare time was playing in pubs in Galway, but when he moved to Dublin I reached out to him and asked if he wanted to play some tunes together. The goal at that stage was to get into pubs, start playing music some John Prine covers and stuff like that - and get a few free drinks out of it.In the autumn of 2022, Robbie and Oisin (vocals/guitar) contacted Ross McNerney (guitar/mandolin), whose addition to the group configuration completed the puzzle. The morning after the first show Ross had played with his new friends was a pivotal one. He messaged us the next day, recalls Robbie, telling us the music we had played was too good not to pursue. From that day on, a more disciplined structure was applied: a band name, no more pub gigs, and a proper ticketing format for shows. After that night playing with them and having listened to the songs they wrote, says Ross, a more experienced musician than his new friends, I felt that things needed to be done as correctly as possible.Amble by name, amble by nature? You only have to hear the music to appreciate just how accurate this is. Ambles tunes conjure up truisms instead of clichs: Across their forthcoming EP, The Commons (arriving November 1st), tracks such as latest singles Little White Chapel The Commons, plus Thoughts Flood Back to You, One Mans Love, and Luke the Navigator present indelible marks of deft rural-related storytelling and a musicality that is equally traditional and current. Unusually for a contemporary group, all three members are songwriters. Every one of our songs tells a story. We had no ambition to add bells or whistles or anything production-wise, says Robbie. It was more like were putting a microphone in a room, recording the music, and thats it.
