Exciting events and experiences happening this month in Quinte West.
It was the opening of the instantly-legendary Hank’s Lonesome Honky Tonk Tavern in Picton, ON that inspired Prince Edward County-based musician Bill Wood with the concept of creating a project interpreting the timeless songs of Hank Williams and possibly winning a residency at the popular spot. Wood, a career musician, vocalist, songwriter and recording artist (Eye Eye, Bill Wood and the Woodies, Bill Wood and Burke Carroll, Bill Wood and Chris Bennett) rarely performs cover tunes, but the music of the Williams (aka the Hillbilly Shakespeare) holds a special place in his heart, as it does in the hearts of millions of others. When he brought the idea to fellow County artist, legendary guitarist Johnny G. Mazzei (Whoa Nelly, Jerry Foster, the Cliff Divers, GT Harris and the Gunslingers, the Jeremiahs ) the deal was sealed. Soon enough, the Hankin’ Out concept was broadened to include the music of other historic Hanks— including Hank Snow and Hank Thompson. After their first standing-room-only show, Hankin’ out at Hank’s is set to become a regular monthly tradition and the duo and their take on these country classics is in demand in venues across Ontario.

Zachary Lucky is the genuine article - unapologetically old-school country, armed with a husky, baritone voice. The Grandson of Canadian Country Music pioneer Smilin' Johnnie Lucky, he often receives comparisons to songwriters such as Gordon Lightfoot and Kris Kristofferson. He sings of Canadian places and people as knowingly as he might Townes Van Zandt or the Rio Grande. It's a relatable show on many levels, and conjures universal feelings that have passed through our collective timelines. Already hailed as a master storyteller by outlets ranging from No Depression to The Globe and Mail, Zachary is becoming a legend in his own right and has safely reserved his spot at the table of Canadian roots royalty. Zachary released his new album "The Wind" on November 1st 2024 which amassed 300,000 streams within the first month of its release and has been called "one of his favourite records of the year" by Brad Wheel in the Globe and Mail. The album has been in the top 10 on the European Americana Chart for three months and counting and has received rave reviews.

Banjo music, Ragtime, Country Blues, Folksong, and Jazz After years of mutual admiration, Mike T. Kerr and Lotus Wight have created a musical union, a concoction of instruments and influences, each avenue explored down to its root by these unique musicians. While both in high demand as performers in their respective chosen fields- Wight in the folk and old-time festival circuit and Kerr as a highly in-demand guitarist on Toronto's live music scene- their shared passion for music history and rare recordings have given common musical ground together as performers. Mike's guitar playing recalls the entire history of the instrument while Lotus explores adventurously through many folkloric styles, handmade contraptions, and heartfelt stories.

In May of 2022, a collective of songwriters, musicians and spoken word artists paddled the Rideau Canal from Kingston to Ottawa, Ontario. This traveling musical residency was spear-headed by Kate Weekes, a wilderness canoe guide and award-winning songwriter. The journey offered an opportunity for settler artists to explore questions of personal and cultural identity and sense of place through songwriting. This includes learning about the colonial impact of the canal in the unceded traditional territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and the Huron-Wendat. The culmination of travel by through the Rideau and Katarokwi watersheds is a body of original work written by Kate Weekes and featured on her new album, Rideau Roots. The project is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and will be celebrated in communities along the Rideau. Joining Kate at her Nov. 15th release at The Old Church Theatre in Trenton James Stephens and Brian Sanderson.

Toronto-based folk duo, Basset, are full of timeless heart, with deeply human lyrics and stunning duo harmonies reminiscent of the early folk revival. Yasmine Shelton has one of those instantly recognizable voices that can dive, dip, and soar all in a single phrase, while Sam Clark brings nuanced and tasteful support on guitar and other acoustic instruments. Their Canadian Folk Music Award-nominated album In The Clay (2022) explores various themes of life in change, Shelton and Clark’s travels, and their lives growing up across the United States and Canada. CBC Q’s Tom Power says “if you’re a lover of great close harmonies, like Simon and Garfunkel, or Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, I think you’re going to love this”. Basset have toured heavily in the past year, including tours through Canada, the US, the EU, and the UK. They have developed a live show that is both sincere and disarmingly funny, with warmth enough to soothe anyone ready to lean in. They have plans to release an EP in summer 2025, with the recent release of “Sail On” and “Oh California” as the first singles.
