Event Information

An intoxicating gumbo of global soul, surf noir, and psychedelic funk, all filtered through a vintage, analog haze. Listening to Gitkin feels like stumbling across a forgotten reel-to-reel in a dusty Havana pawn shop or a smoky Marseilles speakeasy. Theres a deep sense of wanderlust baked into every groove part spaghetti western, part funk exotica, with twangy guitars that slither like snakes through a desert bazaar.New Orleans-based Gitkin, also known as Brian J, a Grammy-nominated artist and producer renowned for his production skills (working with Cedric Burnside, Bernard Purdie, Cyril Neville) and as the mastermind behind the funk ensemble Pimps Of Joytime, is experiencing surprising success with this passion project. With monthly streams over 300,000 Gitkins three self-produced studio albums are resonating with fans globally. In 2022 inspired by the success of his streaming and social media response Gitkin put together a band and started playing live. The trio featuring Palestinian musician Simon Moushabeck (keyboard, accordion, percussion) and Cuban American Washington Duke (Drums) brings a new life and dimension to the recorded music. Teaming up with international booking agent FMLY they embarked on their first European tour in September meeting enthusiastic audiences in Germany, the UK, the Netherlands,France, and Austria, selling out a number of shows. Y La Bamba w/ special guest Los Tranquilos

Sun, Nov 9 at 7:00 PM
SLO Brew Rock

Event Information

To declare one thematic narrative from Lucha, Y La Bambas seventh album, would be to chisel away a story within a story within a story into the illusion of something singular.Lucha is a symbol of how hard it is for me to tackle healing, live life, and be present, Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos, lead vocalist and producer of Y La Bamba, says of the title behind the album which translates from Spanish to English as fight and is also a nickname for Luz, which means light. The album explores multiplicitylove, queerness, Mexican American and Chicanx identity, family, intimacy, yearning, lonelinessand chronicles a period of struggle and growth for Mendoza Ramos as a person and artist.Lucha was born out of isolation at the advent of COVID-19 lockdowns, beginning with a cover of Hank Williams Im So Lonesome I Could Cry, and following Mendoza Ramos as she moved from Portland, Oregon to Mexico City, returning to her parents home country while revisiting a lineage marred by violence and silence, and simultaneously reaching towards deeper relationships with loved ones and herself. The album reflects another tier of facing vulnerability, as Mendoza Ramos explains, and is a battle cry to fight in order to be seen and to be accepted, if not celebrated, in every formanger and compassion, externally and internally, individually and societally. As much as la lucha is about inner work, fighting is borne from survival stemming from social structures designed to uplift dominant groups at the hands of suffering amongst the marginalized. While peeling back layers of the past to better understand the present has been integral to this period of growth for Mendoza Ramos, time, trauma, and history can feel like interconnected, abysmal loops and music has remained a trusted space for Mendoza Ramos to process, experiment, and channel her learnings into a creative practice. In this way, Lucha has become cyclical, documenting the parallel trust Mendoza Ramos has built with herself to allow the songs to guide how they should be sung, or even sound.Ive been wanting to let whatever feels naturalwith rhythm and musical instruments like congas and singingto just let it be, in the way that Im trying to invoke in myself. Lucha reflects on, the continuing process of learning how to exercise my producing skills, explains Mendoza Ramos. I have so many words, ideas to work with all the time, and the hardest part for me has been learning to trust my gut. And figuring out how I work best, and with who.The result is a collection as sonically sprawling and bold as its subject matter. On La Lluvia de Guadalajara, Y La Bamba leans into a minimal, avant-garde soundscape as Mendoza Ramos recites a spoken word poem. Later, rhythms veer into bossa nova territory on Hues ft. Devendra Banhart, a full-circle collaboration for Mendoza Ramos as she reminisces on the significance of finding Banharts work nearly two decades earlier: He was the first young Spanish-speaking musician that wasnt playing traditional Mexican music I heard when I was 21. There was nothing like it around that time.

L'Eclair

L'Eclair

Fri, Nov 14 at 7:00 PM
SLO Brew Rock

Event Information

Growing up in Bulgaria in the late 1990s, brothers Stef and Yavor Lilov were shaped in a myriad of unseen ways by the centuries-old folk music that filtered through their daily lives. It helped mold their creative spirit and inspired them to begin making noise together at a young age, and that unique and intuitive creative alchemy has been a foundation of guitarist/keyboardist Stef and drummer Yavors band LEclair since they formed it in their adopted home of Switzerland a decade ago. After spending the past two years meticulously crafting Cloud Drifter, their fourth album and debut for revered U.S. label Innovative Leisure, LEclair is for the first time now led by the Lilov siblings. The result is an album seamlessly melding modernity with nostalgia and played with a robotic tightness that remains deeply human. Indeed, Cloud Drifter will move the body as much as it does the brain. We really wanted to finally be able to capture in the studio the feeling that people had listening to us live, says Yavor. Part of that involved really taking the time to polish the music between recording and mixing. Can we make this more impactful? How can we make it more attention-grabbing? Putting in that work and really dissecting the production helped us achieve the sonic result we were looking for. LEclair has built an international fanbase thanks to its impressive command of rhythm, dynamics and electro/acoustic alchemy, which has nodded equally to vocal-free titans such as Can and Tortoise, expansive, spacey and blissed-out jams ((2021s Confusions) and more stripped-down, feel-good and genre-jumping destinations (the 2018 debut Polymood). Two live sessions for KEXP have accumulated nearly 900,000 views combined, beaming LEclair onto the playlists of adventurous listeners around the world. And although Cloud Drifter reverberates with heavy, party-starting grooves (Vertigo), electrifying future club anthems (MEMPHIS) and even trap-inspired beats (Nova Umbra), its true revelations come from LEclairs first-ever use of vocals, which are performed in a dizzying variety of styles by such guests as Pink Siifu, Gelli Haha, Phoebe Coco, Girl Named GOLDEN, A Ghost Column and Forest Law. The title track is also the maiden appearance of new LEclair member and singer/keyboardist Ins Mouzoune, whose group Roshni is signed to Stone Pixels, the The Orchard-distributed label co-founded by Julien Fawaz & the Lilovs. That was a special song in the process, with the three of us in the studio, finding the melody together, Yavor recalls. It wasnt like, we send the instrumental, you bring the melody and then well see. It was collective work towards choosing the right ingredients.
