Join Matthew C. Whitaker (HENGE) and Shunya for an evening of music celebrating the release of Whitaker’s second solo album, Songs for the Weary - a collection of graceful compositions incorporating classical guitar, rich string arrangements, and subtle electronics. Matthew C. Whitaker Matthew C. His debut, Man With the Anvil Hat (2016), introduced his flair for intricate harmony and richly textured soundscapes. His forthcoming release, Songs for the Weary (2026), continues this exploration with eight gentle pieces for classical guitar, lush string arrangements, and subtle electronics. Shunya Alan Keary is a multi-instrumentalist and producer, with a strong musical heritage, writing and producing music from the age of fourteen. Performing under the alias Shunya, his sound is a contortion of influences, stemming from his background in classical violin and jazz bass, and growing with the sounds of Manchester's electronic music scene.

SAMANTICS - 'THE TOUR OF ONE GUY WITH TWO SIDES'
music

SAMANTICS - 'THE TOUR OF ONE GUY WITH TWO SIDES'

Sat, Mar 7 at 7:30 PM
The Barrel House Ballroom

Event Information

Samantics is back with ‘The Tour of One Guy With Two Sides’ which is almost as much a mouthful as his lyrics. Having hand-picked a selection of some of his favourite venues, each night will showcase the two contrasting sides of Samantics across two very different sets. Opening as his own support act, he will begin with an acoustic set each night, covering many songs from his ever-extending back catalogue, playing favourites in ways not heard before and stripping back the songs to what has always been at their core - the words, swapping beats, bass and keys for the instrument people love to hate - a ukulele. This will be Ukuliphop in it’s rawest form. After this and short break, he will return to stage (potentially in a different t-shirt for effect) for the full-beans, energy riddled, live-looped set that he has become known for. With two sets to fill, this ‘evening with Samantics’ will allow for more rarities and older songs that often get overlooked or kicked off the set list to make space for the inevitably requested Pop Song. With stories to tell and a lot more words to remember than usual, it will likely be a night filled with thought, laughter, honesty, emotion and some undoubtedly awkward moments where he forgets the lyrics and asks for help. These shows have 3 tiers of pricing. The full/suggested price is £12 but there is an option to pay a little less if it helps, or a little more if wish, and you feel you are in a position to do so.

With a powerful new stage show, immersing audiences in a profound and beautiful soundworld, The Rheingans Sisters take traditional music in bold new directions. A not to be missed live show.  Previous winners of BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for ‘Best Original Track’ and nominees for ‘Best Band’, with their uniquely blended sound of fiddles, voices, feet, banjos, guitar, synths and the powerful bass drones of the medieval tambourin à cordes, The Rheingans Sisters are one of the most visionary acts on the British folk scene today. The Rheingans Sisters’ last album Start Close In received enthusiastic critical acclaim, celebrated at #2 in The Guardian’s Top 10 Albums of 2024: “it’s clear that the Rheingans Sisters have made their boldest album yet”. MOJO Magazine called it “joyous” and Trad Folk described it as “experimental and brave and genuinely magical”.  “A radical leap” – The Guardian Produced by New York based Adam Pietrykowski (whose genre-diverse work spans rock, contemporary classical and prog folk) the visionary duo’s current work is “wildly expressive; at the forefront of the recent upsurge in experimental, drone-led folk” (KLOF). Event Information

After a five-year hiatus, Kibitz are back with a funky vengeance bringing new members, new music & plenty more dancing! Their latest incarnation as a quintet - violin, accordion, guitar, bass & drums - shifts the focus to new original music. Still predominantly inspired by the soundscapes of klezmer and Balkan music, they bring together a sonic whirlwind of their eclectic influences, incorporating elements as far reaching as jazz manouche, Irish trad, reggae, classical and prog rock, playfully experimenting with time, texture, mood and dynamic.  Expect to get a sweat on with their infectious beats and melodies! They have performed regularly throughout the UK playing everywhere from festivals, theme parks and theatre shows to weddings, bar mitzvahs and beyond. Highlights from the early years include performances at Llangollen International Festival and Latitude Festival, running workshops at WOMAD Festival and the University of St Andrews, and featuring on the BBC Four documentary 'The Jews of Leeds'. Most recently, their July 2025 appearance on Beat-Herder Festival's Smoky Tentacles stage was met with critical acclaim. One thing has remained consistent since the early days: it's moving music to move your body to - performed with good feeling & good humour! Meriel Paget :-  Meriel is a violinist and vocalist whose music blends the richness of folk traditions and stories with contemporary sounds. Rooted in her musical upbringing in Welsh and English folk music, she composes using loops and electronic effects to create intricate multilayered arrangements that act as a base for her songwriting.   Growing up in rural West Wales, Meriel’s compositions reflect the emotions and experiences of her journey into adulthood, often drawing inspiration from the landscapes and memories of her childhood home.      With her newly formed Leeds-based band featuring Emily Keeble on cello and vocals, Leo Thomas on drums and Samwise Seidel on guitar, Meriel and her band are exploring new textures and soundscapes that range from energetic to more delicate, cinematic moments.

entertainment

FRIENDS IN HARMONY - Fundraiser for Rowcroft in memory of SUE BRADSHAW

Wed, Mar 25 at 7:30 PM
The Barrel House Ballroom

Event Information

Not just a good cause… Wednesday 25 March sees three South Devon bands coming together at the Barrel House,Totnes with three aims: to have a lot of fun; to give the audience a good time; and to raise money for the local charity Rowcroft Hospice.  Ain’t Misbehavin’ specialise in toe-tapping swing from the 30s and 40s; 7-person acapella group Parting Gesture use rich harmonies and tight rhythm in their own arrangements of familiar pop songs; and duo Rhythm and Shoes have carved out a big reputation in the South West for their blend of sparkling vocal harmonies with powerful rhythm guitar.  + special guests to be announced It’ll be quite a party! The driving force behind this event is a desire to celebrate the life of Sue Bradshaw, a much-loved Totnes personality who died of pancreatic cancer in 2023. Sue was well-known to all three groups as a friend and a gifted singer, meeting up with them at open mic nights, and performing frequently with the accordionist of Ain’t Misbehavin’, Martyn Warren. Martyn says: “As well as a beautiful voice and instinctive showmanship, Sue was such a vibrant personality, kind and funny, and it was a huge shock to lose her to this pernicious disease. She had nothing but praise for the care she received from the NHS and from Rowcroft during her last months, and it is the least we can do to put on an evening of music that Sue would have loved, and which we hope will raise a lot of money for a truly vital local service.”

Fri, Mar 27 at 7:30 PM
The Barrel House Ballroom

Event Information

We are very excited to announce that William The Conqueror featuring Ruarri Joseph, Harry Harding and Naomi Holmes will be performing live in Totnes on Friday 27th March at The Barrel House Ballroom.William The Conqueror, the critically acclaimed, shape-shifting trio from Cornwall, have quietly established themselves as one of the UK’s most vital underground bands.Rooted in groove driven alt-rock and steeped in the storytelling traditions of folk and Americana, their sound is equal parts fuzz and finesse and has seen them tour with everyone from Bright Eyes to Nathaniel Ratliffe and Wilco, making records with Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Laura Marling) and Joseph Lorge (Phoebe Bridgers, Perfume Genius) along the way. Now several albums deep, and never content to stand still, William The Conqueror continues to evolve - a band shaped by the road, sharpened in the studio, and sustained by a stubborn belief in the redemptive power of a great song, well played. We are also very happy to announce that support on the night comes from Matilda Finn Frances.

THE RUMBLE-O's
entertainment

THE RUMBLE-O's

Sat, Mar 28 at 8:00 PM
The Barrel House Ballroom

Event Information

THE RUMBLE-O's are a band of some of Bristol's finest musicians - guitarist Andy Taylor, keyboard sorceress Helen Stanley, low-end navigator Gaz Williams, and rhythm-engine driver James Phillips - who play as if they’ve been beamed straight out of a lost 1960s surf film and dropped onto a modern stage with their reverb tanks still warm.  Their music is a lush collision of surf-rock twang, spy-movie swagger and retro-future charm: instrumental soundscapes that feel like the soundtrack to a forgotten Tarantino sequence or a sun-bleached road movie. They channel the raw electricity of early-’60s surf music, big beats, bigger guitars, oceans of spring reverb, but update it with modern punch, swagger and a cinematic edge.  The band’s sound pulls from everywhere: the blistering attack of Dick Dale, the shadowy cool of ’60s spy themes, the quirky brilliance of Joe Meek, even touches of spaghetti-western tension and space-age pop. The result is a live show that hits hard, moves fast, and refuses to let the audience sit still. Their performances are playful yet tight, vintage yet fresh. A blast of adrenaline that turns any room into a surf-soaked dance party.  When The Rumble-O’s take the stage, consider yourself warned: the tremolo will shake, the drums will rumble, and the energy will hit like a wave. For audiences, it’s a trip through dusty desert highways, neon-lit boardwalks and far-out space stations.  No passport required!!
