Event Information

Journey back in time at Ross Bay Villa Historic House Museum, a volunteer-run museum and restoration project located in Fairfield. Admission is $7.50 plus tax per person. Tours must be booked ahead of time. All funds support the volunteer-based Ross Bay Villa Society which owns and operates Ross Bay Villa. Drop in a little early for your Saturday tour for our Ross Bay Villa Gift Shop and Book Nook. Sunday Nov. 9Lucky BarDoors: 7:00 Toronto based garage punk psych rockers, Wine Lips hit the stage for the first time in the fall of 2015. Initially a part time project between songwriter/guitar player Cam Hilborn, and drummer Aurora Evans, the band began playing clubs in Toronto, stretching organically to surrounding Ontario cities, and then Quebec. Now a decade into their career, the band has wowed crowds across the globe with their aggressive and catchy blend of punk and psychedelia. Jackson McDonald AKA King Bob has been a semi-regular fixture in the Victoria music scene since moving from Parksville in 2012. Since officially forming last year, the band has played several sold out shows, released their debut LP Rookie, been named Zone Band of The Month, and played The Phillips Backyard. Expect super catchy hooks and relatable lyrics that have made the band one of Victorias fastest rising punk groups. The Dog Indiana are a Victoria-based power trip who make a hell of a racket. Blending jagged noise rock with a grungy sense of melody and a a dash of psych rock, the group has made a serious mark on the underground BC music scene through regular touring and a series of acclaimed releases.

The “Pig War” in History and Memory

Thu, Nov 20 at 7:30 PM
TBA

Event Information

Did you know the border between Canada and the US was determined because of a pig?  On November 20th at 7:30, visit Ross Bay Villa Historic House Museum in Fairfield, and learn about an unusual chapter of early settler history with UVic historian Gordon Robert Lyall.  In 1859, an American settler on San Juan Island shot and killed a pig owned by the Hudson’s Bay Company during a dispute between Great Britain and the United States over a small group of islands in the Salish Sea. Known today as the “Pig War,” this conflict captured historical imaginations, making a Berkshire boar the star character in the final settlement of the international border between Canada and the US. A summary of key moments in the San Juan Island “imbroglio” will engage questions of causality and how historical memory can be reframed by subsequent historians for contemporary purposes.  This discussion concludes with comments on how the resolution of the so-called Pig War and the creation of the US-Canada border has impacted Coast Salish peoples. Tickets are $10/person. As seating is limited, they must be prebooked.  All proceeds support the Ross Bay Villa Society, the entirely volunteer based society which runs and owns Ross Bay Villa, a restored historic house museum built in 1865.

STUDIO ACCESS - November 30th
entertainment

STUDIO ACCESS - November 30th

Sun, Nov 30 at 6:00 PM
TBA

Event Information

Studio Access is a drag show built with disability justice, COVID awareness, sobriety, and community care at the forefront. Disabled, queer, and sober identities so often intermix, yet spaces for us to thrive simply don’t exist in the same way that they do for able-bodied folks. This special edition of Studio Access is a fundraiser to help keep the doors of the Brass Iris open. In our current late stage capitalist hellscape, we keep seeing arts spaces shutting down, and physically accessible third spaces are already so hard to find. Our community can’t afford to lose another wheelchair accessible queer owned studio, and the show Studio Access could not exist without the Brass Iris, full stop. Queer, disabled, immunocompromised, neurodivergent, and sober individuals deserve full unrestricted access to community, celebration, and joy. We deserve tattoo studios that are built with us and our bodies in mind, and we deserve fun nights out without risk of catching debilitating illness or hitting ableist access roadblocks. Let’s fight for both - when no one else will, we take care of eachother. FEATURING: 🍄 BOY GORGEOUS 🍄‍🟫 OLIVE THISTEA 🍄 G WIZ 🍄‍🟫 LA CROSSE 🍄 SYLVESTER STALETTO 🍄‍🟫 EARLE GAY 🍄 ROBIN WOOD MISSION STATEMENT Queer community doesn’t just belong to the able bodied, and pride shouldn’t exist without radical disabled and immunocompromised inclusion and accessibility. Disabled, queer, and sober identities so often intermix, yet spaces for us to thrive simply don’t exist. In an ongoing pandemic, immunocompromised people have been fundamentally ostracized from society. Drag shows are more often than not entirely inaccessible to a large portion of physically disabled and neurodivergent audiences, and almost all nightlife comes alongside massive peer pressure and triggers for sober individuals. Ableism is so ingrained in us that this is considered normal and acceptable. We can do better, and we must do better. Studio Access is here to uplift the overly marginalized, the under represented, and the dehumanized. Queer, disabled, immunocompromised, and sober individuals deserve fully unrestricted access to community, celebration, and joy. We have the power to make that happen. BARRIER-FREE PAY-IT-FORWARD TICKETS Financial accessibility is really important to us, as disabled people face some of the highest rates of poverty. For this reason, we have lowered our ticket costs as much as possible for this show, while still offering five barrier-free tickets. The barrier-free tickets are targeted specifically for low/no income disabled folks. To claim a ticket, message us on @thisteahaus with your preferred name to put on our ticket list. No need to prove your disability or financial situation to us.If you want to help ensure our ability to keep costs low and keep offering barrier-free tickets (while still covering show expenses), you can purchase pay-it-forward tickets at our ticketing link. If it’s in your means, we’d really appreciate it! ACCESSIBILITY INFO The Brass Iris strives to be an accessible and accountable space as much as possible. Our studio is wheelchair accessible, with no stairs or large bumps. Our bathroom is gender neutral and on the smaller side, but has a wide entry, lower sink, and support bars. Persons in larger chairs may have some difficulty. We are on a bike route, as well as the 15 bus route. Parking in our lot is extremely limited, though there is parking available across the street on Carlton Terrace, or in the nearby parking lot with the Shoppers and Tim Hortons. Masks and sanitization of hands required upon entry. Please be aware that performers will not be masked during the showHEPA air filters will be used throughout the space, courtesy of Masks4Victoria! Volume will be at a lower level than is standard for drag shows, to be more sensory friendly. That being said, lighter cheering and some applause will still be welcomed, so please feel free to bring extra ear protection if you need! Earplugs will be available for use. There will be absolutely zero use of flashing lights, moving lights, or strobes, as well as no use of smoke/fog machines. SHOW INFO Seated room - rented chairs will be arranged in rows without tables, and we'll have dedicated space for folks who would rather get comfy and sit on the floor with a blanket! If weight limit on the chairs is a concern, reach out and we will make sure you have comfortable seating! There will be one 20-30 minute intermission halfway through the show, with an estimated 2 hour runtime.Weather permitting, we will have an outdoor sober barPlease refrain from wearing scents - maintaining a low/no scent space is an important factor in accessibilityCash tips are highly encouraged, and we will also accept tips through Square payments! While our age restriction is not strict, tattoo studios are traditionally adult spaces and there will be mature content matter. 16+ recommended If you have any questions at all, reach out to @thisteahaus on Instagram!

"Stir It Up": Christmas Pudding Making Workshop

Sun, Nov 30 at 1:00 PM
TBA

Event Information

On November 30th from 1-4, come to Ross Bay Villa Historic House Museum to experience a taste of Victorian Christmas. In the 1860s, the Roscoe family lived at the Villa and brought their own traditions from home. The Collect for the fifth Sunday before Christmas begins "Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works..." This led to the British custom of preparing Christmas puddings on that day. The Roscoes would have connected with loved ones far away as they stirred and added their wishes.  Participants need to bring their own apron as they will be measuring and stirring together all the ingredients for a Christmas pudding to take home, from a real Victorian recipe. Not gluten-free, not sugar-free, not vegan. Pudding cloths will be also be provided, along with a pre-prepared pudding to sample and festive refreshments. This workshop is $65/person. Space is limited, so please book in advance. All proceeds support the Ross Bay Villa Society, the entirely volunteer based society which runs and owns Ross Bay Villa, a restored historic house museum built in 1865.
