Jefferson Performing Arts and the Nicholl's Players Present As Long as the Earth Lasts An award winning play by Nicholl's professor, John Doucet. John Doucet based the play on stories passed down by his ancestors, survivors of the 1893 Cheniere Caminada Hurricane. Known locally as the Great October Storm of 1893, the hurricane killed an estimated 2,000 people, making it one of the deadliest storms in U.S. history, and effectively washed Cheniere Caminada off the map. The Cheniere Caminada refugees of French heritage were some of the earliest settlers of Westwego and were the largest of the population in the city after 1893. It is still possible to hear French spoken among the residents.
